Director's Word

Message from the Director of the MRTC-Parasito

Malaria Research and Training Center (MRTC):

In 1988, the Malaria Research and Training Center was created within the Department of Epidemiology of Parasitic Diseases (DEAP) at the University of Mali, through a partnership grant provided by the Rockefeller Foundation and the World Health Organization to a consortium including the National School of Medicine and Pharmacy (now the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy and Odonto-stomatology) in Bamako; the Institute of Parasitology at the University of Rome; and the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases (LPD) at the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

That partnership grant was renewed in 1993, and additional core funding, including support of an in-country NIAID senior scientist, has been provided by the U.S. Public Health Service’s Office of International Health through its Health and Human Resources in Africa (HHRAA) Initiative, administered by USAID, and by the USAID mission in Bamako. This support has been coordinated by the Laboratory of Parasitic Diseases at NIAID. [...]

Our projects

The Developing Excellence in Leadership and Genetics Training for Malaria Elimination in sub-Saharan Africa (DELGEME) is a training programme sponsored by the Wellcome Trust Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science Africa (DELTAS Africa) initiative in partnership with the Department of International Development (DFID) and the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA).

WANECAM is the West African Network for Clinical Trials of Antimalarial drugs. This network is being supported by grants from the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP).

The WANECAM 2 project aims to accelerate the development of the  Ganaplacide/lumefantrine  combination for the treatment of uncomplicated malaria by conducting clinical trials in four countries in West and Central Africa: Burkina Faso, Gabon, Mali and Niger.

Malaria in pregnant is a public health problem in sub Saharan countries where 11 million pregnancies are exposed to malaria infection. Plasmodium falciparum in pregnant can cause adverse maternal health and poor birth outcomes. Artemisin-based Combination Therapy (ACT) used in treatment of uncomplicated Plasmodium falciparum malaria in pregnant women has the efficacy in Africa.

The PfTBV Malaria Blocking Transmission  Consortium was formed in 2019 to develop and execute on a strategy to compare, select and develop malaria vaccine candidates. Using innovative trial designs, the consortium will 1) accelerate well-established candidates into the clinic for direct comparison and evaluation 2) select the most efficacious malaria vaccine to stop transmission of Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) from humans to mosquitoes, and 3) establish assays, endpoints, and regulatory pathways for definitive efficacy assessment of a transmission blocking vaccine (TBV).
